Engerland... engerland Whats the general concensus on The English ( not the race!... I know the answer already.. ;0) ) but 1. c4...

I was giving it a go and found it quite natural to find the book moves, it seems quite versatile and not too passive, with a bit more dynamic pawn structure that the frustrating KIA I am presently using.

I have heard of 'Anti-English' counter measures though, is this something to be greatly aware of or would this be a reasonably straightforward opening to try out and pickup easily?

I know little about it but managed for the first time to draw against my computer on top GM mode with it first time I played it!...

Regards,
Spurtus.

The English Why not? A fine opening, a lot of interesting strategical plans. 1. c4 is not refuted as far as I know (unless you are Sveshnikov, who claims that only 1. e4 gives an edge). It is easier to learn the strategic ideas behind the English and carry them out than in is in the e4 and d4 systems. Plus, in the English you don't have to worry so much about the precise move order for the first several moves (quite important in bullet :) ). Thought I'm not an expert on the opening.

P.S.
I have never played 1. c4, I start with 1. Nf3 and the nplay c4. Thought, it mainly gets to the English, sometimes Reti, Catalan or KID.
