♡ 29 ( +1 | -1 ) English OpeningI have always played 1.e4! for over 30 years now I accepted Fischer's advise that it was "best by test!" but now that I am middle-aged perhaps its time to expand my horizons.
A friend of mine switched to the Torre Attack some years ago and is still giving the kids fits at age 70!
♡ 110 ( +1 | -1 ) English openingIs great, it leads to interesting positions where pawns tend to play a great role. I am not a fan of tactical skirmishes in the opening or state-of-the-art theory lines, so playing the English gives me the chance to play my style of chess :-)
I almost always play non-committal 1.c4 2.g3 3.Bg2, avoiding lots of fashionable lines. There are many possible pawn structures to choose from, Botvinnik system (c4-d3-e4), queenside attack (c4-d3, preparing b4), Staunton system (e3, preparing d4) and so on. Generally I play d4 only if position calls for it, for example 1.c4 e5 2.g3 Nf6 3.Bg2 c6 4.d4 where allowing d5 gives black a bit too easy game IMO. Also vs "non-English" lines where black hopes a transpose to his defence vs 1.d4 it is possible to keep the game in English territory if one doesnt remember Bayonet variation of KID till move 25 :-)
Speaking of Torre, I used to play it before I found English...despite of being relatively easy to play, it has some teeth! Heavily underrated opening IMO.
Good luck with the English!
PS. If you play games with English, how about posting them here for all us English fanatics to discuss and analyze...? :-)
♡ 19 ( +1 | -1 ) PrepariationBefore I try it, I'm going to play over about 100 GM games and see what the opening is about. When I actually get around to playing the English I'll gladly post it here for your amusement! :o)
♡ 46 ( +1 | -1 ) Peppe I also play c4-g3-Bg2. I just recently started playing it again about a month ago and have decided to stick with it. All of my current games as white are of that opening. I've never liked playing e4 and d4 leaves black too many options, so I play the English as white and the Modern as black.
I do admit one of my games is dead-drawn from playing an early d4 in the English. It was a bit of a blunder that I know better than to do next time.
